Care Instructions
At Studio Badge, our work reflects an obsession and reverence for different materials, particularly wood and concrete.
Wood is a natural material and will change gently in reaction to its environment. Where there is high moisture, it will absorb moisture from the air and in extreme cases this leads to warping. Where it is dry, it will release moisture and in extreme cases this leads to cracking or splitting. This is a natural characteristic of wood, and while we do not aim to fight it, we do want to prolong the integrity and life of our wood products.
While concrete is an architectural material, it is composed of natural aggregates and as such behaves like a natural material. Like wood, it reacts to moisture, but in one way — it will crack if exposed to extreme high or low moisture conditions. Somewhat surprisingly, concrete is a relatively fragile material, so it should be handled with care.
Cleaning Instructions
Hand wash only.
Do not submerge your wood or concrete product in water. Instead, hold it while washing or place it on a dry surface and gently clean with a soft sponge, mild soap, and water.
Once your piece is clean, rinse thoroughly and immediately pat dry on both sides with a lint-free cloth. Do not place it on a surface while dripping wet to dry — this will cause little pools of water as the water drains out, which will lead to cracks.
Place in an open space to dry thoroughly. After drying thoroughly, generously apply mineral oil on both sides.
Wood Deodorization
For cutting boards, we recommend designating one side to milder ingredients (e.g., fruits, baked goods) and the other to strongly scented ingredients (e.g., garlic, meat, fish).
For lingering odors or an occasional deep clean, sprinkle with salt and freshly squeezed lemon juice and leave to sit for 5–10 minutes before washing off.
Patina
Over time, your wood or concrete product will darken and/or absorb color and oil from ingredients. To us, this adds to its natural beauty. For a more pristine look, avoid highly pigmented and oily foods.
